"How Can I Help" A Discussion on the Dynamic Between Individual and Collective Action in Social Movements

Event Name: Nonviolent Protest Event Locator: 2024-AASGPD Event State: Confirmed Organization: Gros Institute In this presentation, Dr. Laurette Liesen will examine the vast array of methods used in nonviolent protests, noncooperation, and interventions that have been analyzed by Gene Sharp. He was a political scientist, founder of the Albert Einstein Institute, and scholar of nonviolent political action. He sees nonviolent political action and peaceful resistance as a means of applying power in conflicts with dictatorial governments. Lili Martinez (Class of 2024) will share her experience in planning a nonviolent protest on the Lewis campus against the violence and deaths of the Parkland shooting in 2018.

Event Name: Listening as Activism Event Locator: 2024-AASGSB Event State: Confirmed Organization: Gros Institute Pauline Oliveros (1932-2016) was a pioneering electronic composer and academic who devised a unique approach to music called “Deep Listening,” which focused on meditative and improvisatory aspects of music-making, hearing, and listening. Her activism was rooted in the idea that “the personal is political,” and the act of deep listening while engaging in exercises that explore sound creation is a way to heal ourselves and, in turn, the world. The series of pieces, "Sonic Mediations", invites participants regardless of musical experience to perform the works as a healing practice, or a “tuning of mind and body.” For this presentation, we will learn more about Oliveros and her career, and move on to impromptu performances of the “Sonic Meditations.”
