Gabriela Veronelli for an informational session on the Latinx Testimonios and Pláticas on Language Shame, Resistance, and Healing project. This project invites students to participate in five sessions of plática (in person and remotely) on language shame and resistance. Topics of conversation include Spanish as marker and affirmation of Latine identity, one's relationship and emotional bonds to Spanish and English, experiences with language as barriers and portals to educational success, what it means to be marked as “accented” or “proper”, and negotiations of linguistic expectations that others imposed on us. This project is designed for a small, dedicated group of students—only 10 seats are available—to build community and explore the rich, complex experiences of living in-between multiple languages. Led by Dr. Gabriela Veronelli, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, the Testimonio Project offers you the chance to: Earn experiential learning credit Reflect on your experiences with English and Spanish in a supportive, student-centered community Explore topics like language shame, resistance, healing, and Spanish as a marker of identity Build authentic connections through guided conversation and storytelling Contribute to a digital archive of testimonios that can help build a culture of linguistic justice at Lewis University To learn more and determine if this opportunity is right for you, we invite you to an initial informational session Friday September 5th from 12:00 - 1:00 pm.
